I am planning on getting an acoustic guitar for Christmas, but I know nothing about guitars. Does anyone have any suggestions on what kind I'm supposed to get or where I can get one for cheap? I'm 16 if that has anything to do with the size I need to get???
Also just wondering, is it easy or possible to learn how to play online or better to take lessons with someone? And if it is better to take lessons with someone, is that expensive?
Thanks:)Can anyone help me figure out what acoustic guitar I should get?
In terms of guitars, you usually get what you pay for. Basically figure out how much you can afford, and then get as close to that price as possible. Anything under 拢50 (around $100, I think?) is definitely out of the question, as it will sound horrible and be nasty to play. Try and get some guitar tuition books; the first chapter of these is usually devoted to helping you choose your first guitar. Also, guitar shop people are there to help, so don't be afraid to ask them if you don't know what you're looking for. If you know someone who plays guitar, get them to come to the shop with you to help you out.
I would recommend an acoustic guitar starter kit, which comes with a bag, plectrums, tuner and so on. Most major guitar brands do cheap, entry-level acoustics for beginners. Look out for Ibanez and Stagg acoustics if you want value for money.
Acoustics pretty much come in one size only, but as you're 16 you should be able to cope with a full-size guitar!
I'm a self-taught guitarist and never had any formal lessons. I just picked it up from teach-yourself-guitar books. There are a lot of these available and some are very good. This is good for some people because you can learn the way you want to. However, it requires patience and determination as sometimes you just get an overwhelming urge to give up! You can also get yourself into some bad habits if you teach yourself because there's no-one there to correct you, and this can hamper your playing. If you have a guitar-playing friend, get them to help you out. If not, guitar teachers are great, but you will have to fork out the cash, I'm afraid.
Hope this helped! Can anyone help me figure out what acoustic guitar I should get?
If your hands are small the Martin guitars have slender necks but they can be expensive. A decent beginners guitar is a Yamaha. What you are looking for is the following: you want the strings to lie close to the guitar neck so you don't have to mash like a fool to make a chord. Alot of real cheap guitars are very hard to play because the strings are set way high.
Go to a guitar/music store and ask them what they would recommend. Go ahead and tell them you are going to get one for christmas but are not making any decisions yet - you are just looking and shopping around.
Then: go to your newspaper or local sellers website (every city has one - usually) and look for an individual who is trying to get rid of their guitar for some reason. Look it over and make sure there are no cracks or lumps and bumps and all the tuning gears are tight. One of your teachers at school is usually a good guitar player and knows a good bit about them too. Start asking and you shall receive answers.
If you want to take 3-6 months worth of lessons that is fine but what matters is practice practice practice. You will get blisters at first too that are painful. But they turn to callouses after a bit. Guitar can be fun and you can become quite dedicated to it. There are other instruments too if you decide guitar is not your thing.
Hey, i would say go into a shop and try out different guitars. People answering are giving you brand names etc, and although thats kinda what you asked, personally i think it dosn't matter what brand name it is or if others recommend it as its up to you. I bought a new guitar the other day. I went into various shops and finally found a quite cheap but really good sounding one (its an Ashland by crafter :) ). Which again is not a well known brand like Gibson but still sounds awesome. So yeah i would recommend actually going into the shop and trying out different ones untill you find a nice sounding one. Also the person who owns the shop will guide you on the size and also the make- so dont worry! Just make sure that when you play it, you like the sound and its comfertable to play.(sorry about the spelling!)
About how you should learn- well i self taught myself (have been for 2 years). I did find Youtube very helpfull, along with a chord book and Ultimate guitar.com. I basically just found out how to play songs I liked and by doing so, learnt chords and strumming etc. If you wanna learn a song either go to Youtube and type in 'How to play.......on guitar' or once you know hoe to read tabs go to ultimate Guitar.com
You can get lessons if you want but to save money i would just self-teach!
P.S i would not recommend buying one that too expensive as you might quite, but if you do just sell it! haha.
Hope i helped and good luck!!
