Tommorow I have to meet with an assistant principal about an incident that happened friday. I'm 14 and I was wondering what body language I should use to look calm and confident because he can get pretty intemidating. Should I look into his eyes? I'll be sitting down what should I do with my hands/arms?How can I look calm and confident when talking to an authority figure?
Okay, here's some suggestions:
- arrive early, so he knows you aren't trying to avoid him
- strong knock on the door, nothing too quiet, but you don't want to be overly loud either - you get the idea.
- move forward to greet him, give a firm handshake
- bring up the topic of why you are there before he does, right after the handshake - say you are there to 'help him understand what happened' or something similar - by saying you are helping him, it makes it seem like he's less powerful
- move the chair you sit in towards his desk, if you can - you want to be moving toward him, not away from him
- when in the chair, be sure to lean towards him and do make eye contact
- keep an even tone of voice, a good posture in the chair, and when using your hands, make broad, open gestures - don't cross your arms, nor grab the chair arms tightly
Now if you really screwed up something and feel guilty about it, probably you should try a different approach.How can I look calm and confident when talking to an authority figure?
Your body language is just a symptom of how you feel. If you didn't do it just have all the right answers. Telling the truth is easy. Lying is complicated. So I really would not worry about your body language it will take care of itself. You may have another problem. You did not say that you didn't know who did it.
Breathe naturally and easily, have your hands clasped or folded in your lap, look straight into his eyes without looking up, down, or all over the room when he asks you questions, and....whatever else you may do....don't say, ';I swear to God I didn't do it!';
Keep eye contact and don't deny something more than once in a statement. Make sure you say everything in clear and Concise sentences, and stick to the facts. Have your hands in your lap and don't fidget. But above all, don't panic. I'm sure youll be fine.
relax your shoulders keep eye contact breathe evenly, loosen your arms and concentrate on what they're saying, don't worry about how you look or what they think. it's important to stay focused but relaxed. good luck
