How can i loose my habbit of looking down when I figure skate?

I have a bad habbit of constantly looking at my feet when i skate and my coach keeps telling me to look up but i never end up doing that no matter how many times she tells me, and when I do look up I feel like im doing everything wrong lol :PHow can i loose my habbit of looking down when I figure skate?
Think of putting your chin up! (That's what ultimately worked for me).

Besides it being dangerous to look down, from the outside point of view it doesn't look good. When you're looking down, more than likely your head is facing downwards too - and that doesn't help with posture. Now if you are told to look up, it's possible your eyes are just looking upward, but your head is still hung down . . . that's why I say it helps to think ';chin up'; so your whole head stays up!

It will feel ';wrong'; for a while until you get used to it - just like anything you work hard to practice on. It'll become second nature if you keep remembering to do it.

Things to consider:

* You'll see where you're going better (especially in a crowded FS session).

* Looking up with your chin up makes you look more confident.

* If you were in competition, you could connect with your audience better if they could see your face.

* The coach who gave me this advice would put stickers or a bandaid on his students' chins so they would always feel something there to remind them to keep that chin up (ha ha).

Hope that kinda helps!

look at skaters like caroline zhang, kimmie meisner, sasha cohen, etc.

they dont put their head down while they're skating.

i'd say keep your back straight (its harder to keep your chin down if you arent slouching.) and imagine what they would look like if they were doing crossovers or certain parts of your program and imitate it. even imagine you are like them.

sometimes that is the only difference between first, and 8th place.
When you first look at your feet, tell yourself to look back up! I used to do that when I just started but once I passes Basic 5, I started to look up. Know that you aren't doing anything wrong when you look up. Think of you feet as really ugly, even if they aren't.
practice makes perfect... i know im sick of that saying too.

I play hockey and you have to look up the whole time as well, I'd just keep workiing on it honestly thats what I did and I look up 89% of the time. I know its not 100% but its good..

You could wear a neck brace for a while until you get used to keeping your head in the same position... I wouldnt do it but Im just saying

Much Love,

Runny Nose

Your coach should have a routine to break you of this. Telling you not to is not working, so ask your coach for tips. If all else fails, get a new coach.
yea it is dangerous. i used to have that problem. look at the top of the board. its what i do and it works pretty well.
Look at the boards and if there are bleachers, look there, not at anyone in particular.

Hope that helps.
Maybe when your looking up think positive
