How can I figure out what file system is on a hard drive?

I have a hard disk based navigation/audio system in my vehicle and I am trying to modify some of the files contained on the drive to change functionality. I have been able to get my computer to physically recognize the drive but it will not assign a drive letter because it is most likely not compatible with windows formatting. How can I gain access to the drives contents? How can I figure out what file system is on a hard drive?
try downloading a linux LIVE cd - try Ubuntu

boot off of the CD, it won't affect your install of windows (I'm guessing you're running) but if it's any known readable format then it will mount your drive and assign the equivalent of a drive letter.

if that doesn't work - search online for the name of the navigation audio system and see what format the files in, maybe someone has alreadly solved the problem you're facing and has produced some software that you can use.
