How do I figure out what kind of power cord my laptop uses?

I need to buy a new AC adapter online and I am unsure what numbers to look for. My laptop is a compaq presario and there is a number on the bottom that says M2000. Do I go by that or some numbers on my ac adapter??How do I figure out what kind of power cord my laptop uses?
You can do this one of two ways:

1. Search for items for your specific model of laptop. For instance, do a google search on the following:

';compaq presario'; ';MODELNUMBER OF LAPTOP'; ';power'; (or you can substitute ';replacement parts'; for ';power';).

2. Look at the AC adapter. What you are looking for is an identical tip (end piece that plugs into the laptop) with the OUTPUT the same. It'll read something like: 5VDC _ 3.3 mA

What this means is that it's 5 Volts Direct Current, 3.3 Milliamps. There is one other piece of info that is VERY important: The ';_'; between the 2 numbers. What that means that it's positive over negative or negative over positive. If you get this backwards, it could potentially ruin the laptop or worse, cause a fire. I would NOT recommend this scenario unless you get someone who knows about electronics to verify what it means/says.How do I figure out what kind of power cord my laptop uses?

the item you are looking for is a DL606A adapter.

I hope that helps.
There should be a tag on you AC adapter to give you all the info you need. Failing that, contact Compaq/HP
