How do I figure out the percentage here?

I just enrolled in college, and it's been more than ten years since high school, and I am really terrible at math. I am studying a algebra book I found on the shelf, and I am stuck on this question. I know how to get the percentage of a number, but how do I get to the answer to this question. The How to get is more important than the actual answer. thanks.

Phil is buying a camera for $100, including 6% sales tax. Find the cost of the camera before sales tax.How do I figure out the percentage here?
Hey,

If phil pays $100 total for the camera then, the $100 includes the sales tax. This much I suppose you figured out, the algebraic way to solve this is this...

Let

X represent the cost of the camera

6% written as a decimal is .06

so we know that X+.06X = 100 b/c X represents the cost of the camera and .06X represents the sales tax of the camera and together they equal $100

so

X +.06X =100

1.06X=100

X = 100/1.06

hope this helpsHow do I figure out the percentage here?
Okay, here's the trick. Phil has to pay 6% sales tax on a camera that costs some amount of money that we don't know. But, we do know that he is spending $100 altogether. So, the tax is 6% of the price of the camera, and we add that to the price of the camera to get the total. So what he is actually paying for the camera is 106% of its cost. We can do it this way: 1.06 X = 100 You can use your calculator here to figure out the answer, but first, you have to get the X by itself. To do this, you divide both sides by 1.06. Your answer should be $94.34. So, the camera cost $94.34. That means that the tax is $100 - $ 94.34 which equals $5.66. Make sense?
percents are a ratio of ';something'; over 100.

So 6% is 6/100

The general formula for adding tax to an item is:

Let:

o = original price

t = tax rate (decimal form)

f = final price with tax

o * (1+t) = f

So if you plug in the numbers from the problem here, we get:

o * (1 + 0.06) = 100

Now solve for o:

o (1.06) = 100

o = 100/1.06

o approx 94.34

So the original price was $94.34
let the cost of the camera before sales tax be x

sales tax is 6% on the original cost

hence amount of the sales tax is 6x/100

but the total amount comes to be $100

therefore, x+(6x/100) = 100

106x= 100*100

x=$94.33
1.06x = 100 to isolate the x, divide by 1.06

= 94.34

x = cost of the camera without tax

100 is the total price of the camera.

.06 is the sales tax rate (6% = .06)

cost + 6% of cost =100

take cost =x

then x+6%x=100

6%=6/100

=%26gt; x+6/100x=100

=%26gt;x+0.06x=100

1.06x=100

=%26gt;x=100/1.06 = watever the calculator displays!!
sales tax=6%=6/100=0.6 in decimal form

cost+cost*0.06=100

cost(1+0.06)=100

cost(1.06)=100

cost=100/(1.06)

cost=$94.34
try multiplig 6 times 100 then move the decimal then subtract it from 100
100/1.06=$94.34
same as below
google it.
