WITHOUT ESTIMATING (can't stress that enough!), how would you calculate the square root of a number on a piece of paper?
For both whole numbers and decimals? How would you figure the square root of a number on paper?
it's easy, it's fun...be the life of the party. Say for 53...we want the sqrt(53). Begin by writing it down and mark off every two positions
53.00 00 00
ask yourself what's the largest integer that squared, goes into the first pair (i.e. 53) which is 7 and here the 'rest of the story...
| 7 2 8 0
| 53.00 00 00
|7 49
| 4.00 what times 14- (that's the 7 doubled * 10) goes into 400
|14_2 2 84 and subtract
| 116 00 bring down the next pair (double 72)* 10 and divide
|144_ 8 115 84 and subtract
| 16 00 bring down the next pair (double 728) * 10 and divide
|1456_0 0 and subtract
| 16 00 00 next pair (double 7280)*10 and divide
|etc etc etc.
trying to keep formatting with the '|' character...didn't work. Looks alot better on paper.
so the sqrt of 53 =7.280+
No estimating...Viola!How would you figure the square root of a number on paper?
